Steve Ferguson
Progress for LangleyCurrent councillor
Everything Steve Ferguson said on the record during the 2026 Township of Langley election, in their own words. 11 statements, grouped by subject. Nothing here is graded or summarised. Each Fort Langley question went to a few candidates, so the subjects reflect the questions they were given as well as what they chose to raise.
Transportation and transit
How do you balance the competing needs of pedestrians, transit riders and drivers at the council table? What is the right mix between building roads, supporting transit and investing in sidewalks and cycling, when not everything fits in every corridor?
Yeah. First of all, some housekeeping. The Chamber's got an awful lot of questions here. You have questions regarding taxes, safety, industrial transportation. The first thing the Progress for Langley is going to do, we'll sit down with you. And rather than a minute and a half trying to solve every Chamber problem there, we'll sit down with you your leadership and we'll go over them as we'll roll up our sleeves or get it done I think the answer is in we've got buses coming we want safety around SkyTrain stations you want all sorts of implementations of things regarding transportation we want to sit down and talk to you about not just for transportation with all the Chamber … that's my housekeeping.
What is one achievable improvement to public transit that you would advocate for during your four-year term?
This is an important issue for our community. We've got bus rapid transit … We've been working with TransLink for a number of particular things in Gloucester. We want to improve Salmon River uplands for part and also we want to make sure everything is in play for Skytrain. A little bit of history on Skytrain. If it wasn't for a decision between the township of Langley and Surrey, that would not have come down to the city of Langley. So I'm very committed to transportation for the next three, four years.
Taxes and spending
Debt has become a pivot point in this election. Where should council draw the line between borrowing to meet the needs of a growing community and taking on too much financial risk? Would you finance future amenities and infrastructure with debt, and if not, how would they be paid for?
I think the interesting thing on debt is risk versus value. Many of us in this room have got mortgages or had mortgages. Many of us had a business … which they had to take a risk to get value. And everything we've done this term, we've taken time to plan for it and prepare for it. And it means that debt is going to pay for through our services. And so I … believe that going on in the future, we have done an awful lot of things in the past. Now we want to put community centers, we want more roads, we want more things in the Township of Langley to believe, and I believe, to be the most livable community in the province. I think we're doing that.
Public safety and enforcement
The Chamber is hearing more from its members about encampments and street crime, including in Willoughby. What is the Township’s role in addressing street disorder and street crime, and what would you advocate for at the council table?
Absolutely. Failing to plan is like planning to fail. We, with the Township of Langley, have a plot of plan for dealing with these things. We've introduced more by-law officers, more RCMP, more fire people, but we also have to work with the courts, the BC government, addiction services, we all have to work together as a team because this thing is not solved overnight. I believe in some ways the province has left us with a lot of challenges. Regardless of that, … We have to work on solving these problems. Nobody likes, I walked by somebody at Tim Hortons today lying there. I felt bad. I didn't know what to do. I continued on my way, but as I drove home, I felt I should have done something. I think every single one of us feel a bit that way. Thank you for the question.
Agriculture and rural land
Question 2: Truck parking and the rural plan
Truck parking is a challenge. The Land Commission has a huge say on what uses are appropriate. (ie: right to farm) We have tremendously improved and added 11 bylaw officers (continue working with stakeholders and continue getting the job done).
Heritage and character
Following the loss of the historic McIver House in Glen Valley, what should the Township do to identify and protect vacant or at-risk heritage buildings?
Steve Ferguson, Progress for Langley. And I wish you would have used another one as well, because there's many houses in the community that are heritage designation. We work with the owners. Owners of private property, but there are incentives. There are opportunities for people with these type of houses to repair them, to upgrade them, and to work with them. So let's basically … work with the private owners. Thank you.
Other
By the end of your four-year term, what one measurable result would you commit to delivering to Fort Langley?
I can't think of anything better than we are now in the process of moving Marina Park to a new location, and those people driving down the road, you'll see there's good traffic lights where there may be a new regional park for Fort Langley, and that'll be a great thing. I think also I want to comment on the official community plan that we're talking about for Fort Langley, an opportunity to go forward with that. So I think Fort Langley is a gem of the course of our area. So looking forward to working with you. Thank you.
Opening and closing statements
Opening statement, Chamber of Commerce forum
Hi, I'm Steve Ferguson and welcome to elections 2026. Figure out which one, whether it's … municipal or provincial. I'm Steve Ferguson. I've been a member of Council. I'm … working with Eric Woodward, Progress for Langley. Why am I running? Because I believe Langley Township is the most livable community in not only the region, but the province. Why is that? Because here we're out there, we're working on roads, recreational centers, community centers. We're working on parks. We've got two more regional parks coming in. It's an exciting time for Langley and I think everyone … in this room is happy to live here. They love to live here. And I love Langley.
Closing statement, Chamber of Commerce forum
Steve Ferguson, Progress for Langley. Thank you, Chamber. Thank you for all the people coming out today, all the candidates for putting their time. This is an important time. You have to make a Decision you have to make is do you want to move Langley forward with schools, with parks, with all sorts of other things, roads, or do you want to just cut things back and just status quo? Langley is one of the most livable places in the province. Let's keep it that way. Thank you.
Opening statement
Hello, Fort Langley, and welcome. Thank you for inviting me. I am Steve Ferguson, and I am your community councillor. I work here with the Progress for Langley, our team, under the direction of Mayor Eric Woodward. Why am I running? Because I believe today, even today, that Langley should be proud. All citizens of Langley should be proud of the Langley they live in. You know why? Because we are the most livable region in the whole country, if not province. What we have, we have facilities for schools, facilities for parks, recreation, police, fire. We have all the many things. We have seven regional parks in this community, hundreds of acres. So when you talk to me about Langley, I love Langley. I respect the citizens that live here, and I think most people are proud to live here. Thank you so much.
Closing statement
That's Steve Ferguson, Progress from Langley. Thank you for all the people that came out today. Thank you to Fort Langley Community Association, and good luck to all the candidates. As you walk home tonight, as you leave this room, you will go into a community that is one of the most livable communities in the region, if not the whole province or country. Why is that? Because under the direction of Eric Woodward and our council, complete council, we have more roads upgrades, we will have recreational facilities, and many things for seniors, for families, for many other things. So when you walk out, Langley is a community that you love, and you love living here. Thank you very much indeed, and good luck.
