Overview
Hammond is a historic Maple Ridge village and heritage mill town on the Fraser River, predating the rest of Maple Ridge. The village was established in the 1880s by the Hammond brothers (John and William); the sawmill that opened on Maple Crescent in 1910 (later Hammond Cedar) became the village's principal industrial anchor for over a century before Interfor closed it in 2019. The Hammond Community Centre and Hammond Stadium anchor the civic and recreational amenity.
Hammond is the southwest corner of Maple Ridge, bounded by Pitt Meadows on the west and the Fraser River on the south. The Hammond Area Plan in the Official Community Plan names four precincts: North Hammond, Upper Hammond, Lower Hammond and the Maple Meadows Business Park. Upper Hammond holds the Heritage Character Area, where the City found the most heritage features. A heritage listing alone does not protect a building from demolition.
For schools, Hammond is in School District 42. Hammond Elementary (11520 203 Street, kindergarten to Grade 7) is in Upper Hammond. The district's catchment locator settles the elementary and secondary school for an address.
Maple Meadows West Coast Express station serves Hammond, and part of North Hammond is a provincial transit-oriented area around it. The station has 5 weekday morning trips to Waterfront Station and 5 afternoon trips back. The first morning train is timetabled at about 50 minutes to Waterfront. Port Haney, Maple Ridge's other station, is about 56 minutes.
Bill 44 applies to lots zoned single-family, and the Hammond Area Plan says the added density applies in each residential precinct. Ask Maple Ridge Planning about the specific lot's zoning and heritage status before paying for redevelopment potential.
The former Hammond Cedar mill site itself, roughly 11 hectares (27 acres) of Fraser riverfront, now cleared and undergoing demolition and remediation, is the principal future-redevelopment land within Hammond. The City's updated Hammond Area Plan (OCP amending bylaw adopted late 2025) directs new mixed-use and higher-density growth toward Maple Meadows Station while protecting employment lands, but the mill site's own future use is not yet settled. It's a mill town that built BC, then watched the mill die in its lifetime
The Bailey Lumber Co. sawmill opened on Maple Crescent in 1910 and by the early 1920s, operating as Hammond Cedar, it was the largest producer of cedar lumber and shakes in the British Empire. Interfor shuttered the 109-year-old mill in fall 2019, putting roughly 130 USW members and about 200 workers total out of a job. Hammond residents grew up to the sound of that mill, and a generation is still adjusting to the silence.

The street grid is a deliberate piece of Victorian planning, not accident
The Hammond brothers (William and John, from Fenstanton, England) and Emmeline Mohun laid out the 1883 townsite on the English pattern: short blocks, service alleys, and a designated park block. Walk Hammond today and that grid is still legible; it's the only part of Maple Ridge that doesn't feel like postwar suburbia.

Hammond was Maple Ridge's blue-collar neighbourhood, and still wears it
The mill and the CP Rail yards drew working families through the 1910s–1940s, who bought small, affordable cottages within walking distance of the gate, many of them built by local carpenters like the Olsons. The building stock, modest 1900s–1940s detached homes on tight lots, still tells that story even as infill creeps in under the Hammond Area Plan.

Baseball is the neighbourhood religion, and Larry Walker is the patron saint
Larry Walker (NL MVP 1997, seven Gold Gloves, Hall of Famer) was born in Maple Ridge in 1966 into a Hammond baseball family; his grandfather Ken Walker moved to Hammond to work at Hammond Cedar, and the game ran down three generations from there. Hammond Stadium's main diamond is named Larry Walker Field (11509 207 St), home to Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball.

The 65-year-old outdoor pool is a heritage flashpoint
The Hammond Outdoor Pool was raised by community fundraising and has run summers for 65 years. Council has identified Hammond Community Park as the preferred site for a new year-round aquatic and ice facility that would replace Hammond Hall and the outdoor pool. A 2025 council-received petition opposes the build; locals describe it as a heritage park they paid for themselves.

This land is Katzie before it's anything else, and the Nation has asserted that publicly
The Royal Society of Canada recorded a Katzie settlement stretching ~1,600 m along the Fraser from the Hammond mill site toward present Katzie Reserve land; in Katzie oral tradition, Hammond is where the sky wife released the first eulachon into the Fraser. In 2019, after Interfor's closure announcement, Katzie publicly asserted their historic claim to the former mill site.
